Arriving

I’m currently writing this from Brussels!!!!! Seriously, I can’t believe I’ll be in Brussels for the next 5ish months!!! I keep having to remind myself this is real and happening RIGHT NOW because it still feels like I’m dreaming. Studying abroad has been a dream of mine since I was 14 years old, after seeing pictures of my cousin studying abroad. And now, 7 years later, I’m no longer dreaming.

My last few days in America were spent celebrating my 21st birthday. I was so excited to celebrate it in America since it wouldn’t have mattered once I came over to Europe. The weekend before, I went down to High Point to celebrate with and see some friends one more time. On my actual birthday, I went to a piano bar in National Harbor with my best friend, her fiancé, and my parents. It was super fun!! I ended up spending the night with my friend at her apartment in Arlington, where we had a lazy morning, just catching up after not seeing each other for like 2 weeks and getting brunch down the street before I went home to pack. Not like I was leaving the very next day. Ahh. But here I am! Two suitcases, a duffle bag, and a backpack later. And honestly, what an awesome birthday week!!!

My flight was delayed 2 hours getting here, but that’s okay. It meant I had less of a layover (it was 6 hours instead of 8) in Copenhagen. I had an ENTIRE row all to myself flying across the Atlantic though. Living the dream right there. Did I sleep though? Absolutely not. I think I closed my eyes for maybe an hour. I was way too excited to sleep! I did sleep a little bit on my flight out of Copenhagen though.

Once I landed, I met up at the airport with Mackenzie, who’s the only other student from High Point who’s also studying at IHECS and she’s also my roommate here! We kiiinda knew each other while at HPU because I was an RA and she was a resident in the building at the same time last year, and through last semester we met up a couple times to talk about our visa and rooming together and stuff. She's super fun!

From there, we went straight to our apartment. We’re living in a neighborhood right outside the city, in Ixelles. We got the full tour of the place from our landlord and his friend, who was also our translator since our landlord is better at French. We have 2 other roommates, one who moves in by the end of this week and one that is moving in in a few weeks. So hopefully they’re easy to get along with!!

Our apartment is 4 bedrooms - although one bedroom definitely is suppose to/use to be a living room and one bedroom is juuuust big enough to fit a small bed and a small dresser. We also have a cramped but kinda cozy kitchen and a balcony with a nice view. Below is the view from my bedroom.

After the tour of the apartment, Mackenzie and I went to dinner at an Irish pub just down the street, which was one of the only places open Sunday night. Good food though! Now I’ve unpacked my room and am writing this in the hopes of staying up until 10pm so my sleep schedule doesn’t get too messed up.
