Strasbourg

If you’re ever planning on getting engaged in France, skip Paris. It’s too cliche. Strasbourg is the city to go to instead. It’s so much more beautiful there and the whole atmosphere is much more romantic. It’s not as touristy, it’s much cleaner, and the city as a whole is prettier and more authentic feeling.

But seriously, Strasbourg was GORGEOUS. In some ways, it kinda reminded me of Amsterdam with a river running through the city and lots of bridges and bikes everywhere.

For this trip, it was Mackenzie, Marion, and Marion’s friend from home, Annette. We all got there kinda late, so we all just went straight to the hostel (Mackenzie was in a different hotel bc she booked later than the rest of us), hung out for a little bit, and went to bed. We made plans to do a food tour of Strasbourg, where we would get to walk around the city at our own pace and try food/drinks at different restaurants throughout the afternoon.

The following day, our only full day in Strasbourg, we got up and went to a buffet styled breakfast spot. After that, we headed towards the church in the city center to meet up with Mackenzie and to sign up for the food tour. Welllll the food tour was in between seasons and being updated. Aka there was no food tour available. Sad day.

So we walked around the city to Petit France. We stopped to take pictures, went to a vintage store (where I found an inexpensive jean jacket that actually fit!!! I’ve been looking for one for FOREVER so I was super excited), got coffee at a cute little shop, got cake and a beer at another cute little shop, and just enjoyed the cold but beautiful weather. After the cake shop, we split up. Marion and Annette went to go shopping, while Mackenzie and I continued walking around before sitting at the river to talk and lay out in the sun.

After a while, Mackenzie and I went back to her hotel to warm up some and charge our phones. After that, we all met back up again for burgers for dinner. Those were some of the best burgers everrrrr. Throughout the day, we had some really good conversations with Annette, who seemed really interested in US politics/laws/policies - racism, gun control/laws, 9/11, etc. were all topics that came up. And it was really interesting to hear the Norwegians’ perspective on these topics.

Overall, Strasbourg was a 9/10. You definitely don’t need more than a weekend here, but it’s so beautiful here that it’s worth the trip!!

Also....the trip getting home was...eventful. Marion and Annette were both going to the south of France, while Mackenzie and I were going back to Brussels for a few nights. Both Mackenzie and I thought our bus left at 9:30am. We triple checked where the bus station was after what happened in Vienna, but never once realized our bus left at 9am instead despite putting 9am into BOTH our calendars and checking our ticket multiple times for the location. Luckily, we found another bus that left at 1:15pm and found a café to hangout in and eat/drink at and charge our phones in from the freezing cold (it was 36 degrees that morning! So cold!). But ya - learn from us and make sure to triple check your location AND the time. But we made it back to Brussels safe and sound the same day we were planning on.
