Last weekend, my roommate Mackenzie and I went to Copenhagen, Denmark! It's such a GORGEOUS city and so clean there!! Some of my fellow exchange student friends here at IHECS live in and attend a university in Copenhagen, so they gave the two of us some recommendations (shoutout to Amalia and Thomas!) that we also checked out.
We arrived in Copenhagen around 7pm (19:00), so we went straight to the hostel, dropped our stuff off, and then went into the city to find some dinner. This time, our hostel was a private double room, so we have no interesting roommate stories. Except for that time Mackenzie found underwear in the hallway (what's up with her and underwear haha kidding. Love you Mackenzie!!). By that time, around 8pm, almost everything was closed except for bars. Luckily, we found a random Italian restaurant that happened to be open for us to eat at. So we got some dinner and walked around the city for a bit before heading back to the hostel to get ready for a full day of exploring the next day.
I have no idea what to compare Copenhagen to, because I've never been to a city like it before! It's a busy city with cars everywhere, but there's also people biking everywhere. I honestly think I saw more people biking in Copenhagen than I saw in Amsterdam! Below is a bike rack outside the metro (left) and a random bike rack outside a store (right). There weren't a lot of advertisements, but the ones I did see were mostly about how to be more eco-friendly and green - especially in the metro stations. The city also just felt cleaner - both in that not much trash was seen but also in that the air felt cleaner. Overall, I loved Copenhagen and would love to go back and explore it some more one day!!
We got up and ready to go by 10am the next morning. We ate breakfast at a cute cafe near the city center, where I got some avocado toast (my favoriteeee). The weather was beautiful!! Very very cold, but it was sunny. The running joke that weekend was that Mackenzie and I were cats because we were constantly seeking the sunniest spots everywhere we went. After breakfast, we took a canal ride around the city. The tour guide was really friendly and gave a great tour! We saw the opera house, the Little Mermaid statue, a very modern neighborhood, the Amalienborg Palace, and all the unique bridges and buildings there are to see.
After the canal tour, we headed over to the Rosenborg Castle for a tour. It was BEAUTIFUL there!! The amount of detail in each room was insane - all the gold, patterns, jewels everywhere. This is where the king and queen's crowns are kept. One of the crowns weigh about 5 pounds - holy strong head. There's also everything used for a royal baptism displayed here. Both are still used today for the king and queen, and the baptism supplies which is super cool!
Afterwards, Mackenzie and I went to Nyhavn. This was definitely my favorite spot we saw. All the colorful buildings and old ships kept in the canal, some street performers playing a violin, the sun on our faces. It felt like I was in a movie!
After Nyhavn, we got dinner at Gasoline Grill (recommended by Thomas and Amalie). It's said to be the unofficial "world's best burger", and I think I may have to agree. After dinner, we just walked around and admire the city views before heading back to the hostel.
The next morning, we got breakfast at another cafe and then went to the Amalieborg Palace to watch the changing of the guards at noon. It was definitely much less of a show than I was expecting; there wasn't that much shouting and screaming, not as in sync as I had imagined, nor was it as big of a deal. The soldiers were also so young looking! Like some looked as young as 16-17 years old. The changing of the guards starts at another castle, then they head over to the Amalieborg Palace. Amalieborg Castle is where the current royalty lives. The Palace is 2 buildings: one for the queen and one for everyone else. According to the flags (or lack of), only someone else in royalty was present in the Palace; the queen was not. After watching the changing of the guards, Mackenzie and I had to get to the airport to catch our flight home! Copenhagen, I loved you.
